It's been a while now since django, and ours was very non-standard, but even so we ran into a bunch of the problems in this set of slides:
why django sucks and how we can fix it
UUIDs, apps that exist but you can't use them, needing to extend the auth system... all very familiar. Hopefully these suggestions will be taken to heart.
